Sudanese-British billionaire Mo Ibrahim has warned Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema that the country’s post-election tensions risk undermining the democratic gains made during his first term.
In comments to Business Insider Africa, Ibrahim said recent political developments had raised concerns about the strength of Zambia’s institutions and the country’s longstanding reputation for peaceful democratic transitions.
“Mr President, your first term was marked by progress. Do not squander what you have achieved,” Ibrahim said.
“We are following with deep concern the unfolding situation in Zambia after the presidential election.”
Ibrahim Raises Concerns About Zambia’s Institutions
The warning follows a period of tension after Zambia’s August presidential election, including the arrest of opposition figures, the killing of former Transport and Communications Minister Mutotwe Kafwaya and the temporary suspension of vote counting.
The closure of some of Zambia’s highest courts, including the Constitutional Court, shortly before the deadline for challenging the election results also drew criticism.
For Ibrahim, the significance of these developments extends beyond the election itself.
“Elections are, of course, a vital test of democracy. But that test goes beyond what happens at the ballot box.”
“The arbitrary arrest of opposition members, the killing of a former minister and the suspension of vote counting: such acts should never happen in a true democracy.”
He added: “The recent decision to close Zambia’s highest courts, including the Constitutional Court, just before the deadline for challenging the election results, only makes the situation worse.”
Opposition leader Brian Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, were also questioned by police over alleged treason, adding to concerns about the political climate.
