Sudanese-British billionaire Mo Ibrahim has warned Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema that the country’s post-election tensions risk undermining the democratic gains made during his first term.<\/p>\n
In comments to Business Insider Africa<\/em>, Ibrahim said recent political developments had raised concerns about the strength of Zambia’s institutions and the country’s longstanding reputation for peaceful democratic transitions.<\/p>\n \u201cMr President, your first term was marked by progress. Do not squander what you have achieved,\u201d Ibrahim said.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are following with deep concern the unfolding situation in Zambia after the presidential election.\u201d<\/p>\n The warning follows a period of tension after Zambia’s August presidential election, including the arrest of opposition figures, the killing of former Transport and Communications Minister Mutotwe Kafwaya and the temporary suspension of vote counting.<\/p>\n The closure of some of Zambia’s highest courts, including the Constitutional Court, shortly before the deadline for challenging the election results also drew criticism.<\/p>\n For Ibrahim, the significance of these developments extends beyond the election itself.<\/p>\n \u201cElections are, of course, a vital test of democracy.
