Côte d’Ivoire National Reconciliation / Laurent Gbagbo’s Party Wants to Rely on Meambly’s Ideas
Evariste Meambly can be proud of himself. His tireless work towards a comprehensive amnesty law that takes into account compensation for all victims of the Ivorian crises is being examined by political parties. One of the largest in the opposition, specifically the PPA-CI of Laurent Gbagbo, wants to understand it better. This was the purpose of the meeting that took place between Michel Gbagbo and Evariste Meambly.
Michel Gbagbo, a parliament member, paid a highly political visit to the honorable Evariste Meambly. The focus of their discussions was national reconciliation and the ways and means to definitively achieve it. In this regard, Evariste Meambly is ahead of the entire Ivorian political class. As early as 2015, he started thinking about a general amnesty law project. For two years, he worked with his teams on this innovative project. In 2017, this project was submitted by the president of the National Assembly to the Constitutional Council.
Simultaneously, Meambly was very active in promoting this law project, which he believed was the only guarantee of a quick and lasting return to peace in Côte d’Ivoire. The value and depth of his project stem from the fact that he was an elected representative in the Guémon region from 2011 to 2020. As such, he could gauge the pain of the people and their desire to find peace. Hence his activism for the adoption of a general amnesty law.
One of Meambly’s greatest successes was having persuaded the Head of State, Alassane Ouattara, to enact an amnesty law in 2018. This decision allowed for the release of several political prisoners, including the former First Lady, Simone Gbagbo. This is the project that Michel Gbagbo came to understand. Like Meambly, he also believes that peace can be achieved through a more inclusive amnesty law.
At the end of their meeting, Evariste Meambly made a call to the Ivorian political class. According to him, nothing great can be built in a toxic climate. He believes that Côte d’Ivoire can exorcise its old demons by courageously taking into account the proposals he makes. He therefore asks the RHDP, the PDCI, and the PPA-CI to be ambassadors of this law project, so that the country can find lasting peace.
